Using Your Table Top Dishwasher Below the Counter Top

By admin2 Comments

Okay, so I read this comment on someone else’s blog recently and could not comment on it there, unfortunately. This person stated that any dishwasher, including a table top dishwasher can be placed below your kitchen counter. This is not true.

Well unless you can install some sort of extractor pump to your table top dishwasher, as far as I know most of these countertop dishwashers discard the dirty, used water by gravity. Yes, so if the unit is left below the kitchen counter top, and that’s where the discard hose is, the dirty water will back up and overflow at the base of the dishwasher. Remember that, gravity.

Now, if you can somehow attach drainage plumbing lower than the dishwasher, below your kitchen counter, then by all means go ahead. This would not cause any drainage water backup. All it would mean is you may have to extend the water inlet, that is, from your faucet to the dishwasher for the clean water to get to the appliance. If you’re going to go through all that trouble then might as well get the compact dishwasher, which is made for under the counter and extra plumbing required.

It may be cheaper overall to do this extra plumbing with the table top dishwasher, if you are a DIY (Do It Yourself) person. The compact dishwashers are a bit more expensive.

I hope this post is helpful to someone before they overflow their table top dishwasher from poor advice.

Update: I have recently found a table top dishwasher that is equipped with a drain pump. This is great news! What this means is you can now put such a dishwasher under the counter, if you so desire, without the fear of it overflowing. Make sure your countertop dishwasher comes with a built in drain pump before putting it below normal drainage level.

It’s the new 6 place setting model EDGESTAR DWP60ES. I added it to the table on the main page. The 2nd on the listing.

Now that you mention it, I didn’t include that info on the specs. Will do that now. Thanks for pointing that out and thanks for visiting again.
