10 Things to Consider Before You Buy

Important: This is a partial reprint of my articles found elsewhere on the internet, for those who have not seen it as yet.

What do you look for before you buy a Table Top Dishwasher?

I realized that my first page of this blog only had specifications and features but no sort of explanation of each. I apologize, I published that information elsewhere, but now I’ve brought it here.

Brand Name. Firstly, going with a brand name that’s most popular seemed reassuring to me. After all, the more people that purchase a table top dishwasher, the more reviews and help you can get on those. I have found that US/Canada and UK/Europe gravitate to different brand names, mainly because of availability in their region. The more popular US brands include Edgestar, Danby, Koldfront and Haier. In the UK, Zanussi and Bosch seem to be the most popular brands.

Model. After you decide what brand you’re interested in, the most popular models may be of interest to you. Most people go towards specific models so this may be a good indication of price vs quality relationship.

Space consideration. This is not really a separate consideration, but is worth mentioning. The standard size of Table Top Dishwashers revolve around 22 x 19 x 17 inches in a microwave shape. So make sure you have those dimensions free close to your sink unless you want to install some extra plumbing.

Energy and Water consumption. Many companies are now attaching an “Energy Star” rating to their products. Always look for the Energy Star rating as it implies that the countertop dishwasher consumes less electricity and water than other and older models. What this means for you is, less impact on electricity and water bills. It is also safer for the environment.

Noise emission. Different Brands emits varying levels of noise when operating. If you’re not so worried about this because your kitchen is far away from the baby sleeping then ignore it. US brands usually state their Table TopDishwashers to be from quiet to noisy. UK companies quote decibel noise level of their product, where less than 50 decibels is considered quieter and more acceptable.

Wash Cycles. Wash cycles include intensive, normal, rapid, economy and pre-wash. If you know how often you’re going to use your Table Top Dishwasher and for what level of dish soiling, you can minimize your cost by choosing a model with more limited wash cycles, if it suits your needs. Personally, I prefer one which can handle anything I throw at it.

Capacity. Unfortunately, most countertop dishwashers come with a 4 place setting capacity but look out for the off brand which can house 6 place settings like the UK Zanussi brand. Look for brands with a cutlery or silverware basket included. This is great for separating your silverware from the dishes in the same wash load. With the type of water pressure being sprayed onto these items, this is a very convenient addition.

Color. Color preference is a more aesthetic reason for choosing a Table Top Dishwasher than functional reason. The bad news is that once you choose your brand and model, the colors are usually set. There are no color choices when you decide on a brand/model, nothing a can of spray paint can’t solve. Just don’t clog important parts with the paint though.

Warranty. Many retailers offer up to 2 years warranty. If you’re your own fix it person, then you can forgo this and do your own repairs and servicing. If you don’t tinker in it much, then go for the warranty as the food and grease may tend to clog the outflow pipes and mechanisms, which would require more frequent servicing. You can minimize this with quick rinse or soaking of dishes in the sink before you put them in the dishwasher.

Other Considerations. UK brands focus on drying performance as part of their specifications and features. They also focus on temperature of the water during washing as this helps dissolve food and grime and kill bacteria. As far as I’ve seen, US brands also use hot water and dry dishes too, but just don’t focus on it in their main features documentation. Still check because some brands may require hot water faucet installation while some have internal water heaters.

All I was trying to bring across is to check if the model you’re interested in acquiring, has a built in water heater or requires an external source of hot water to wash the dishes. Some models come with built in water heaters while some don’t.

I’m just trying to be objective and let the readers choose for themselves. After all, each person will end up choosing what they feel most comfortable with. The main page with the comparison table puts many features together for comparison and I tried to be as accurate as possible with user ratings.

The rest is up to you – the decision is ultimately yours.

  8. thanks !! very helpful post!

No problem, it’s all info that can be found on the internet anyway, with some serious digging and time though. In any event if you do use content, remember the search engines can penalize if they are too similar. Just rephrase and use. Cheers and good luck.
